While crossing the waterway, we found a female crayfish with newly hatched babies beneath her tail – it was amazing to see the parental care that the females of the species invest in their offspring. Because the babies are ideal food items for so many aquatic organisms, the female keeps the eggs, and then the newly hatched babies, beneath her tail so that she can defend them at this vulnerable stage. And just like so many North American species, some of the Chilean species live in mud burrows that they make, creating a “crayfish chimney” with the excavated mud above the ground.
