Setting up the Darwins Frog breeding facility at the National Zoo of Chile in Santiago/ Instalación del criadero de Ranas de Darwin en el Zoológico Nacional de Chile en Santiago

The Darwin’s Frog conservation initiative, involving the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the National Zoo of Chile in Santiago, is gearing up to finish installing a captive breeding facility for imperiled Darwin’s Frogs this week at the zoo in Santiago. After months of buying equipment, organizing shipping, and ironing out travel details, we are finally ready to put the equipment into the new facility at the National Zoo of Chile. Everyone is really excited since discussions of this project have been ongoing for years.

La iniciativa de conservación de la rana de Darwin, que involucra al Jardín Botánico de Atlanta y el Zoológico Nacional de Chile en Santiago, se está preparando para terminar de instalar esta semana en el zoológico de Santiago una instalación de cría en cautiverio para las ranas de Darwin en peligro. Después de meses de comprar equipos, organizar el envío y pulir los detalles del viaje, finalmente estamos listos para colocar el equipo en las nuevas instalaciones del Zoológico Nacional de Chile. Todo el mundo está muy emocionado ya que las discusiones sobre este proyecto se han prolongado durante años.

Darwins frogs suffer from habitat loss and emergent infectious disease, such as amphibian chytrid fungus. Las ranas de Darwin sufren pérdida de hábitat y enfermedades infecciosas emergentes, como el hongo quitridio de los anfibios.

We will post updates as we install the equipment and will include images of the process. We hope the facility will provide just the environment required to keep Rhinoderma happy and healthy. Right off the bat we would like to thank the folks at ZooMed for their outstanding assistance and support of this project. Linda Reed and the Bagnall family graciously allowed us to use the ZooMed facility in California as a staging area for our equipment before it was shipped to Valparaiso, Chile. Not surprisingly, our new facility in Santiago, Chile, is stocked with ZooMed equipment and terrariums, which are also used in the “frog pod” at the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
